August and September Holidays include Read a Book Day and International Literacy Day and Comic Book Day and provide lots of fun opportunities for reasons to select interesting books.
How about introducing El camino del Café with National Coffee Day? Pretty good excuse to bring coffee and coffee beans into your classroom!
Or World Elephant Day, Black Cat Appreciation Day or National Dog Day with Orión, Lola, Minou or La araña y el elefante? Have you ever celebrated Talk Like a Pirate Day?
For larger and more important themes, September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month and many countries' Independence Days are September 15th and 16th. August 26th is Women's Equality Day, opening the door to books about strong female characters, especially non-fiction, like the Las Revolucionarias series and fiction, like El Portal.
Our newest titles from indy authors are on the home page of the website, but you probably already have a lot of these in your classroom library.
What ideas do you have for connecting readings and holidays, whether real or surprising?
