La princesa y el guerrero: la leyenda de Iztaccíhuatl y Popocatépetl, by Marta Ruiz Yedinak for Fluency Matters The three highest volcanoes in Mexico form a triangle in the center of the country. Two of the volcanoes, el Pico de Orizaba and Iztaccíhuatl, remain silent while the third, Popocatépetl, smolders endlessly, and occasionally erupts violently, making it off-limits to visitors. The mythology of the Aztecs and other indigenous groups of Mesoamerica explains the origins of this triangle of volcanoes as a triangle of love, jealousy, and misunderstanding. From a romantic bargain gone wrong to an eternity of regret, three friends will find out just how far the gods will go to make their story a lesson to others. LEVEL 2 AND ABOVE, past tense

Perfect mix of culture and comprehensibility

La princesa y el guerrero is a great story for Spanish learners and I bet native speakers would equally enjoy Marta Ruiz Yednik's imaginative retelling of this legend. The story is well paced with plenty of dialogue and action and would be fun to act out in class. I loved it!
